The Use of Mobile Phones for Improving Market Access of Small Producers in Uganda

This document provides a summary of a discussion held in August 2011 in TECA's Uganda Exchange Group on the use of mobile phones to improve value chain integration of small farmers.

Small farmers often find it difficult to market their products. A number of initiatives now use text messaging to inform individual farmers about the current market prices. This discussion summary outlines three ways in which projects using mobile phones could become even more successful:   (1) Using voice instead of or in addition to text messaging, (2) Embedding price information in wider initiatives to improve market access and (3) Linking existing initiatives and knowledge exchange. Finally, the summary includes a list of existing initiatives using mobile phone technology in Uganda, which came up in the course of the discussion.
